We plan to do direct support for Dr. Jacques Denis' medical clinic. We'll be there for a week. A call for donations this morning on Facebook yielded over $600 in cash donations (that allowed for the purchase of the medical supplies below this afternoon) as well as expected physical donations that will fill our weight limit capacity for the upcoming flights. But don't let that stop you...be in touch. The creativity supporting One Hundred For Haiti continues to astound us (check http://msbeervendor.com/ for an example of how everyday people are taking part). We'll be going back later in the summer as well and likely will be bringing a team of people with us, so we can accommodate additional donations going down then.

3.31.2011 - Coming in May: a benefit for One Hundred For Haiti in Seattle. She picked up her MBA at Mills College Graduate School of Business where she learned how uninterested she is in corporate America and focused her studies on non-profit and NGO management instead. She is currently studying for the LSAT with hopes to practice immigration law. She is passionate about promoting women's human rights globally and hopes to improve the lives of women and children in Haiti by helping to create sustainable opportunities. Heather came from Paris, Holli from Seattle, where they met in Santo Domingo, and boarded a long, hot bus ride towards the adventure of their lives! Having the freedom of no real connections, they jumped in wherever needed. After three days they determined their primary focus would be as IDP (Internally Displaced Person) advocates and camp organizers. After collaborating with Save The Children and World Food Program, in addition to the funds raised, they were able to provide shelter tents and feed 235 people for four months. In June, they were invited to volunteer with JP Haitian Relief Organization, and spent a couple of weeks doing manual labor and making lifelong friends. JP had taken over the largest IDP camp of 55,000 residents, established two hospitals, and several schools. Holli later returned to JP in September, and became the Logistics Coordinator, shortly after the cholera epidemic hit in October. She will be forever amazed and in awe of this organization and honored to have spent almost five months with them! It was at JP HRO that Holli met her now Fiancee, Charles Henry, as he was one of the Bodyguards. In September 2011, Holli will take a thirteen week CERT course, followed by a fourteen week EMT Basic training course to further expand her ability to assist in Disaster & Emergency Response.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 159px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UUTDiofl9mQ/Tu0QOhg0g5I/AAAAAAAAAJY/CZvHV22p8bk/s200/nathan%2B100FH%2Bphoto.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687219746139046802" />
NATHAN BEAN (Strategy / implementation):
Nathan Bean grew up in North Conway, New Hampshire as a Boston Red Sox fan. He dropped out of art school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and afterwards, foolishly moved to Ogden, Utah. He found a home in Seattle, Washington and has made people laugh in Tanzania, India, Nepal, and Thailand. Nathan was sent to Haiti after the January 2010 earthquake and was surprised by the amazing adventure it turned out to be. He now works with Haitian Organization Program for Education and Health (HOPEH) and is raising a five year old crazy person named Miles Cary Bean.

GREG BENNICK (Founder / executive director): Greg is the founder of One Hundred For Haiti and has been to Haiti seven times since the earthquake. Immediately after the January 12th earthquake in Haiti, Greg was on the crew of the Liberty Schooner, an all-volunteer mission that sailed from Miami to the southern coast of Haiti to bring 10,000 pounds of medical supplies and food to the people in most dire need. The Liberty and its crew were the first independent relief boat to reach the southern coast of Haiti from the United States and Greg received international press coverage of the trip on the Peter Greenberg Worldwide radio program. He realized the need for ongoing involvement and One Hundred For Haiti campaign responds to that need, through ongoing support and development projects. Greg is also the co-founder of The World Leaders Project, a multi-year initiative to discuss issues related to the psychology of human violence face-to-face with world leaders, an initiative that led to a meeting with the President of Guyana as well as correspondence with other governments as well. He was the co-producer of the multi-award winning documentaries “Flight From Death: The Quest for Immortality" and “The Philosopher Kings"two films which explore often unseen sides of the human experience: our relationship with death and the effect that this has on our psyche, and the quest for wisdom and with whom in our social strata does that wisdom reside.

TYSON SADLER (Strategist / Cinematographer): Tyson is a Canadian social activist, filmmaker, and founder of Back Porch Media, a company devoted to creating socially aware media productions. A member of Cineworks Vancouver and the BC Chapter of the Canadian Documentary Organization, Tyson's films have been screened in Film Festivals, on PBS, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and as viral videos on the Internet and around the world. Over the past 10 years, Tyson has established himself as a Director, Editor, and Producer working on a large array of film projects. His interest in filmmaking and social activism has taken him to over 37 countries on 5 continents.

His most recent work has been on a PBS/WETA production on Forgiveness and Reconcilliation which is scheduled for broadcast in early 2011. Social documentary is the heart of his work. He has produced films dealing with subjects such as substance abuse, addiction, mental illness, physical disability, and garbage scavenging in rural Nicaragua. These films have introduced him to the themes of social conscience, trauma and reconciliation. They have helped shape his world view and are an intimate part of his desire to make films with a social impact. Seeing the devastation immediately following the Haiti earthquake and the desperate need for relief and rebuiding inspired him to take direct action and get involved with the One Hundred For Haiti project. He spends his time between New York City and Vancouver, BC. He can often be found singing karaoke in seedy metal bars and eating in Chinese dumpling houses on New York's Lower East Side. He collects passport stamps and loves to play the piano.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PLKRr3mxBIQ/Tu0QhyGkNQI/AAAAAAAAAJk/wB1-Dwv6g6o/s200/christian%2B100FH%2Bphoto.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687220077009843458" />
CHRISTIAN CASTRO (Videographer / strategic team):
Christian Castro is working on his first documentary on immigration. You can usually find him in the woods in his tent or in front of his MacBook editing pictures and tweeting for 100 For Haiti.

PHILIP DUPLESSIS (Ocean/marine strategist): Former owner of the schooner Liberty and coordinator of marine logistics, Philip Duplessis was a driving force behind the late January mission to sail from Miami to Haiti with ten thousand pounds of medical supplies and food. Not statistics. Not facts meant to impress you, but actual lives. Josue Lajeunesse who needed funds to get his sister into a medical clinic after the quake told us that “Without that money my sister would have DIED.” That’s as direct an endorsement as we could ever hope to have, and many more are on the way. Ask us today about becoming part of the group within One Hundred For Haiti that we refer to as 'The One Hundred'.

Be a part of a powerful team. Here are the newest members of The One Hundred, each of whom have donated $1000 or more to the cause:

Congratulations to Michael Scott and Milliman, the newest member of "The One Hundred": thank you for your extremely generous donations to One Hundred For Haiti!
<img style="float:left; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 174px; height: 46px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WnCd072fqWM/TSd3KEqcDWI/AAAAAAAAAD0/SElJTlL1dyg/s320/lg_milliman.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5559543279946304866" />

Jim Ray Company: The Jim Ray Company has been serving the oil and gas industry since 1976 as a manufacturer and distributor of sealing products. <img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 70px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_WnCd072fqWM/TNrbRoiADvI/AAAAAAAAADQ/hZG_W2h33ns/s200/LOGO96.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5537979787789733618" />Their products are used worldwide in the industry and are recognized as industry-leading in terms of quality and performance. We have seen entire medical clinics in need of the most basic medicines. We asked the medical director of one hospital in Port au Prince what he most needed and he replied “Acetiminophen.” Tylenol. Just tylenol. What if you went in for emergency care at the hospital and they had run out of everything including Tylenol?

We are devoted to not only pursuing helping people we’ve already met. We are committed to finding new people to help, nurture, and save. We don’t just come to Haiti when there is someone here reporting on people in need. We come to Haiti when there is NO news. We find people in need. And then we take action. Join us, and you can be a part of this mission.

TO JOIN "The One Hundred" with your $1000 or more contribution to this critical direct action work in Haiti, contact us today. We first met Dr. Denis in the summer of 2008 in Port-au-Prince. He explained that he'd been serving the Delmas 4 neighborhood and its sixty thousand inhabitants for over ten years. After the earthquake, when we went back to Haiti, we stayed with Dr. Denis and visited the clinic where he worked for all those years. The parking area in front of the clinic was filled with patients and we were told that these people would not go inside the building for fear of another earthquake, so they were being treated in tents outside. One Hundred For Haiti was originally founded in order to support the work of Dr. Jacques Denis at the Centre De Sante Saint Martin II, a public health clinic in the Delmas 4 neighborhood of Port au Prince. What differentiates this clinic and Dr. Denis' work from others is that since the earthquake, Dr. Denis has been giving away medicine to people in need if they cannot afford to pay. We promised to help him with this work, and have come through by continuing to stock the shelves of his medical clinic with medicine and supplies. One Hundred For Haiti has also paid for structural repairs to the building itself, which was damaged in the earthquake. This is essential because of the widespread fear in Haiti that another earthquake is imminent. People, even when sick or injured, do not want to enter the clinic for fear of the building collapsing on top of them. The repairs to the cracked walls and stairs give reassurance. One Hundred For Haiti also paid for an examination room to be added to the clinic in 2011. All of these building initiatives utilize Haitian labor, paid fair wages, so that those workers can provide for their families. As one man told us while we were there: "Even more than money, we want a way to make money." Providing jobs is one step towards sustainability. We have a letter from Dr. Denis (still current as of 12/17/2011 even thought it is dated from two years ago), including a list of the supplies he needs. We've reprinted it below. If you have access to any of these supplies, or know of anyone interested or able to volunteer for two to three weeks in any of the capacities listed in the volunteer section, please contact us.
<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

KAY ANGEL ORPHANAGE; Jacmel
Kay Angel, Creole for Angel House has as its mission to provide a home and education for children infected or affected by AIDS in Jacmel Haiti, 25 miles south of Port au Prince. The orphanage opened its doors in 2007 and is now home to 13 children. 5 are HIV+; 2 are severely handicapped; all are lucky to be alive. They are the fortunate exceptions to the estimated 225,000 child slaves in Haiti, children as young as five years old who lost their parents and are now forced to work just to survive. The orphanage’s director, Lia van de Donk, and her local staff care for the children 24/7. Half of them are of school age and visited either the local kindergarten, a school for the handicapped or were taught by own private teacher – until the earthquake destroyed all three facilities. One Hundred For Haiti is currently supporting Kay Angel by providing school supplies, and is putting together plans. Support for Kay Angel comes via private donations, from people like you.

RURAL VILLAGE SUPPORT; La Source
A long-standing relationship with the villagers of La Source Haiti has allowed us to be directly involved in their lives in a number of ways. Immediately after the quake, a personal friend gave the then fledgling One Hundred For Haiti a generous donation that allowed for one villager injured by the earthquake to receive immediate medical attention in a private medical clinic. That same donor also paid for the safe transport from Port au Prince to the Dominican Republic and then home to New York to her father for a teenage girl who had been stranded in Haiti while visiting family. Her family, and her father, are the connection we have to the village of La Source. Since then, One Hundred For Haiti followed through with a promise to deliver over 2,000 lbs of rice to the village from the United States during a time when food was in short supply. Recently, we sent funds to repair a damaged roof on a structure that housed a number of people from one particular family. These people would have been rained on throughout the rainy season in the summer of 2011 had it not been for your donations. Our future involvement in the village will include projects ranging from the building of a medical clinic and school, to the establishment of electricity in the village.

PAST PROJECTS:
35,000 POUNDS OF SUPPLIES SHIPPED; Miami to Haiti
In the spring of 2010, One Hundred For Haiti arranged for the donation, transport, and deliver by sea of 35,000 lbs of food, tents and medical supplies from the United States to Carrefour Haiti. [use attached pic with caption "35,000 lbs of supplies, in a warehouse in Haiti"]. After helping to secure a massive donation of rice, we had that rice sent from Little Rock Arkansas from our donor to Florida, where it sailed to Haiti aboard the Schooner Halie and Matthew. Upon arrival, One Hundred For Haiti navigated the necessary customs/import legalities through a newly developed network of in person relationships. These connections allowed for the supplies to make it safely through and into the country where they were then distributed to people in need.

How We Work In Haiti

We are in touch directly with people in need on the ground in Haiti, both in Port au Prince, Jacmel, rural villages and hard-to-reach areas in the Central Plateau.

Current donations are funding the initiation for the Moto Logistics program.

In terms of the medical clinic run by Dr. Jacques Denis, when he is in urgent need, when donations to One Hundred For Haiti come in to us, we send them to Haiti once we get $1000 or more. We send to Dr. Jacques Denis via Western Union.

Recently donations paid for a seriously injured man in La Source to get medical attention when hospitals were filled with cholera patients. People like you, who had donated $2, $50, $100 at a time, allowed us to send money to Haiti to get him transported to a private medical clinic, have him seen and cared for, and then given medicine as well.

We are a conduit for funds and are absolutely willing to connect donors directly to people in Haiti who need support. We can give you contact information for people in Haiti, and you can send them money directly: we recognize that in the aftermath of the quake, that donors are sometimes skeptical of relief organizations and their overhead costs that absorb donated funds. Our overhead costs are extremely low. We still offer to donors the option to sending funds directly to the people in need. Contact us anytime for details.

The work being done in Haiti by the activists associated with One Hundred For Haiti is ongoing. As money comes in, lives get saved immediately. Our first member of The One Hundred (donors at the $1000 level and up) sent $1200, and within 48 hours, a dying woman named Anith Lajeunesse was moved with that money, from a collapsed home in Port-au-Prince to a private medical clinic where her life was saved. Within one week, that money was also used to fly a young girl home from Port-au-Prince to her father in New Jersey. The group has supported development projects for rural communities and has also provided funding for emergency health care for Haitian citizens as well as evacuation to the USA for stranded Haitian Americans after the earthquake. To facilitate this work, we have accepted donations as small as a single dollar and as large as many thousands of dollars and our work on the ground stems from that support. The assistance we provide comes from our own actions and through our direct involvement with other humanitarian activists in Haiti. We are an officially recognized Washington State Charity.

Any donor skeptical that the funds will reach their intended recipient in Haiti should contact us so that we can put you in touch directly with your questions to any recipient in-country.

You can be one of The One Hundred, the core group of donors at the $1000 level and up. Your place of business, your work, your college can be one of The One Hundred. All it takes is clicking the “Join the Hundred” link and getting in touch. Donations can be one time, or ongoing. All of our work is fully transparent. We work to earn our overhead costs from outside sources so that almost every penny of your donation can be used for direct action humanitarian aid.

501(c)3 / charitable contributions

One Hundred For Haiti is a fully registered and recognized Washington State charity.
